This article is intended to assist users accessing Chalk & Wire through a Blackboard course.
Important: There are two ways to use Chalk & Wire…
- Direct Login at http://eportfolio.strose.edu (CITE and specific other groups)
- In a Blackboard course, via an assignment link (main campus and other Blackboard users)
If you are unsure which group you are in, please consult your course instructor first.
The general process for using Chalk & Wire consists of two steps:
- Upload your work / add content to the assignment page, which you access through the link in your Blackboard course.
- Submit it to your instructor.

Q: Do I need to purchase an account?
A: No. The College will provide Chalk & Wire access if your course or program requires it.
Q: How do I access my account?
A: Your Chalk & Wire access is tied to your Blackboard courses. If you click a Chalk & Wire link in your Blackboard course and get a login screen or other error, contact the ITS Help Desk.

Q: How do I get my work into my portfolio page?
A: Students can copy/paste text, upload images or documents, import from other portfolios, and more. All of these options are available on any portfolio page within the Add Content button.
Q: Should I copy/paste or attach my paper?
A: Your instructor may have a preference, but here are some general guidelines. If document formatting is essential, upload your document (Word, PDF, PowerPoint, etc.) in its native format so that your instructor can view it in its original format. If this is not important or if it is not particularly long, paste it into one or more Text Blocks on your portfolio page(s). It will display in-line with any other files, images, or videos that you place.
Q: How do I edit a video before uploading it to Chalk & Wire?
A: You can use Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, QuickTime, or other free software to trim, chop, or shorten your video clips before uploading to Chalk & Wire. Chalk & Wire offers guides on editing using QuickTime and Windows Movie Maker. We have a short guide to video prep here on TechTalk as well. Just remember that if uploading for edTPA, there are limitations on editing that you must adhere to.
Q: Why can’t I upload my video to Chalk & Wire?
A: Chalk & Wire limits the individual file size for any file that you upload to a maximum of 500 MB. This is designed to help you successfully upload without taking an excessive amount of time and losing your connection and to increase playback smoothness for those watching your videos. Chalk & Wire offers detailed instructions on reducing the size of a video using a program called HandBrake. Keep in mind that if you have used iMovie or Movie Maker to trim/edit, those applications can “Save As” a smaller file size than the original, which may allow you to complete both trimming/editing and shrinking the size without needing additional software.
Q: I see a bunch of pages that are confusing to me – what are they for?
A: If you navigate away from the specific page your Blackboard link takes you to, you may see other courses’ assignment pages. For your specific assignment, only use the page you are taken to when you click the link in your Blackboard course.
Q: How do I submit work to my assessor?
A: After adding content to the page, click Submit on the right side of the screen. If this button is crossed out, hover your mouse over it for an explanation. Often times the content requirements for the page have not been met.

A: If this button is crossed out, hover your mouse over it for an explanation. Often times the content requirements for the page have not been met. First, the page from which you are submitting must contain some type of content. The system does not allow you to submit if there is nothing to assess but you can navigate to a page that contains content and submit from there. Second, some types of assignments require a certain number and type of files/work samples on certain pages. This is true for edTPA portfolios but may also be true for others.
Q: Why doesn’t my assessor’s name appear when I try to submit to them?
A: In the search box, type just a few letters of your instructor’s first or last name. A drop-down menu should appear with a list of search results. Click your instructor’s name so that it appears on the page with a checkmark beside it. Then click Submit.
Q: Where can I view my assessment results/grades?
A: If your instructor scores and releases your results, you may receive an email notification. If not, you can find any released scores, including full rubric breakdown, comments, and/or attached files by browsing to your My Results page. Please note: Chalk & Wire assignment scores may or may not be the same as your course assignment grade. Your instructor may provide a separate grade for the assignment, unrelated to the score you see in Chalk & Wire. If you are unsure, as your instructor.
Q: How do I share my portfolio with someone who doesn’t have Chalk & Wire?
A: Chalk & Wire’s Sharing feature allows you to create a secure URL that links to your portfolio. This is not the same as submitting to your instructor for a grade or collaborating in a Chalk & Wire workspace.
Q: Why are certain features missing or out of place?
A: Your Internet browser is likely the cause. First, try another browser (Firefox or Chrome are preferred over Internet Explorer). Clear your cache, and disable problematic add-ons. Please note: Firefox or Chrome are also the preferred browsers for using Blackboard.
