Demystifying Bb Messages, Email, Announcements, & Notifications

What is a Notification?

In Blackboard Learn, a ‘notification’ is a message or alert that tells students something has occurred in a course. When an event occurs in the system – such as an assignment is created, a survey is submitted, or a test is overdue – the system automatically creates the appropriate notifications. This requires no action by the instructor.

Once generated, notifications are immediately visible to users within Learn on My Blackboard’s Updates and Posts pages, on the Notification Dashboard, and in course home page modules. But, all of these places require that the student proactively login to Blackboard. Luckily, Blackboard Learn can also push notifications in other ways – ways that don’t require students to “check” for them.

This post discusses delivery methods of deliberate communication activity – all of the ways you might proactively contact your student(s). Other types of system-generated notifications will be discussed at another time.

So, that’s a lot of information. To boil it down, if you want to actively contact your students, and you want the message ‘pushed’ to them so they know it exists without having to first login to Blackboard, and you want to retain a record of the message that is easily visible to the students in the course, consider sticking with course Announcements. This tool creates a running list of messages, almost like a timeline-style. This can help see the ‘whole picture’ on a single page.

If you want to actively contact a student or a set of students within a course, and you want the message ‘pushed’ to them so they know it exists without having to first login to Blackboard, and you want to retain a record of the message, consider using Course Messages.
