Missing Content in Blackboard – a mixed content issue

With our new move to Managed Hosting, we have had to enabled SSL on Blackboard. This is a good thing! It makes our system more secure and protects student and instructor data.

But now, Blackboard requires a higher level of browser security than some outside content that may be used inside of your courses. If this is the case, your browser may not show you the less secure content until you tell it to. There are two ways to view this content.

Option 1: Open in New Window

If the content you are unable to view is a link, try right-clicking on the item and choosing “Open in New Window”. This will open the item outside of Blackboard and should allow you to view the content.

Option 2: Enable Mixed Content in the Browser

If “Open in New Window” does not work for the link, or you cannot click on the item, you can enable mixed content on the page. Directions for this vary by browser.

For Mozilla Firefox:

+ In your address bar to the left side of the address, you will see a small grey shield icon. Click on it.

+ A popup will appear that says “Firefox has blocked content that is not secure.” At the bottom, click on the arrow button and choose “Disable protection on this page.”

+ The browser will refresh the page. Click again on the link that wasn’t working. You should now see the missing item. Note: You will have to do this in each course where you find content missing.
