Using WebAssign Through Blackboard

ATTENTION! As of August 1, 2018, your students will need to link their existing WebAssign accounts to new Cengage accounts in order to use WebAssign. For more information, please see Cengage’s new Sign-In Process Document (link).

Accreditation and legal guidelines require that the College be able to verify that students who receive academic credit for a course that has an online component are, in fact, the same individuals who completed the coursework. Luckily, we have an easy way to accomplish this with WebAssign!

Students’ access to a WebAssign course must occur through the Blackboard course. This does not mean you must teach your course using the tools and features in Blackboard, but that Blackboard is the ‘single sign-on’ method by which your students access their WebAssign account.

NOTE: There are two steps to this process and you must complete both in order for your students to have access to WebAssign.

  1. Connect the Blackboard Course to the WebAssign course
  2. Create a link in Blackboard so that students can gain access

After that, everything is exactly the same.

Step 1: Connect a WebAssign course to a Blackboard course

This step tells the two systems to talk to each other, passing rosters, grades, and user information back and forth. You can either create a WebAssign course from within a current Blackboard course or connect your Blackboard course to an existing WebAssign course.

IMPORTANT: Do not connect a Blackboard course to an existing WebAssign course that already has students enrolled. This will cause duplicate student accounts in WebAssign.

In your Blackboard course Control Panel, click on Course Tools > WebAssign.

  • If your WebAssign account contains any existing WebAssign courses that are not already connected to Blackboard courses, they will be listed for you to choose from. Select the one you wish to connect.
  • If you need to create a new WebAssign course click Create Course and fill in the necessary information (course name, discription, dates) and click Submit. This information is transferred to WebAssign and the connection is made.

NOTE: No courses are listed on this page if all your existing WebAssign courses have been linked to other Blackboard courses.

Step 2: Create the access link for students to click

Once the systems are able to communicate, you can setup an actual “link” for you and your students to use to access WebAssign:

  1. In your Blackboard course, click on Customization > Tool Availability. In the row for “Access WebAssign” check the box for Available and click Submit.
  2. From the toolbar in any Course Content section of your Blackboard course, click Tools > More Tools > Access WebAssign.
  3. Give the link a name and description and then hit submit to finalize. When students click on this link they will be redirected to the course in WebAssign.

IMPORTANT: Rosters sync from Blackboard and grades sync into Blackboard once a day, overnight. WebAssign will only auto-sync available courses, so if you want your course to sync, you must make it available!
