How to Create Presence in an Online Course

  1. Canvas Page “About Your Instructor” that includes the following:
    • an audio recording of instructor’s voice introducing herself to her students
    • A picture of the instructor
    • Optional: a short paragraph about the instructor
  2. A Frequently Asked Question Forum will be created and pinned at the top of the Discussions board. It will explain that all questions about assignments should be posted in the forum. The instructor will communicate when during the week and how often during the week she will check the forum. Extra visits to the forum will happen right before an assignment is due.
  3. An “Introduce Yourself to Class” graded discussion will be the first assignment of the class. The discussion settings must be set to require students make an initial post before they can see other posts and they allow students to do threaded replies
  4. The discussion prompt will include the following:
    • Students must either record a video of themselves introducing OR post a picture of themselves and an audio recording of their voice introducing.
    • Students will state why they are taking the class, what is their academic year at Saint Rose, what is their major, one fact about themselves they want to share.
    • Students will be encouraged to type into their post any contact information they are willing to share with their classmates for the purpose of collaborating in the course.
    • Students must be required to respond to 3 other student posts in order to get full credit for the assignment.
  5. Each Unit will have one graded discussion forum on a relevant topic that requires students make an initial post before they can see other posts and that allows students to do threaded replies.
    • Students must be required to reply to 3 classmates.
    • They must be informed that they can, at their discretion, include multimedia such as images, videos or audio files. OR the instructor can require the use of multimedia.
